Weight Reduction

Do you have an internal image of how you want to look?

Would you like to be able to maintain a healthy weight through a combination of lifestyle changes and positive motivation?

Would you like to maintain your weight at a healthy level for you?

Do you want a plan that gets to the root of your problems?

What does food mean to you?

According to the Department of Health, almost 1 in 4 adults in England are currently obese and if we carry on as we are, by 2050, 9 in 10 adults will be overweight or obese. The cost of overweight and obese individuals to the NHS is estimated to be £4.2 billion and is forecasted to more than double by 2050. The cost to the wider economy is £16 billion and this is predicted to rise to £50 billion per year by 2050 if left unchecked.

The Government is committed to taking action to reverse this rising tide of obesity and an increasing number of television programmes tell us we should reduce our food intake and increase our levels of exercise. So, why doesn't it work? Despite all the effort, despite the logical and rational advice and the will power of so many people, some individuals still struggle to maintain their weight. Why?

What did you make of the 5th question at the top of the page - "What does food mean to you?" Certain issues such as Stop Smoking or Nail Biting, for some people, can be very easily fixed. There are exercises they can do, diaries to fill in and usually only 1 or 2 sessions of therapy, and yet with food its very different. If, for example, you never had another cigarette, or never bit your nails again, your life would be fine and you can stop your issue but food is very different. You have always eaten and will always have to eat so you can't avoid food, rather you need to get some balance back into your life.

Another major factor to contend with is the way food plays a big part in so many childhoods. How many of us were given food as treats, or remember sitting down to a big Sunday dinner with everyone around the table or even going over to Grandma's house for tea and cake with her best china? For those of us who do, what does food represent to us, what do we feel when we are eating? And, if like many its very positive, what does that mean when that is taken away from us and we are on a diet?

Think about the pressures that are placed on you unconsciously regarding your body image. Some people have been influenced by the media and the protrayal of the ideal (and often unrealistic) body type. Many people with weight issues may also have some kind of negative reinforcement of their shape through early childhood.

To my mind, there are so many emotional aspects to food and eating that if a person is to successfully overcome a weight issue then these need addressing just as surely as counting calories or only eating proteins or fat or cabbage or whatever.

Awaken now provide a new, integrated programme of between 4 & 12 sessions, tailored to an individual's need and combining the following treatments which could have a positive effect on some individuals:

  • Hypnotherapy to allow relaxation from the day's stress rather than eating.
  • Psychotherapy to uncover emotional issues regarding a person's relationship with food.
  • Goal setting and behaviour modification to develop strategies for successful eating habits and positive body imagery.
  • Time Code Techniques to allow a person to revist their childhood to resolve issues and see things differently.
  • Alignment techniques to heal inner conflicts between what a person wants to do and what they think they should be doing.
