NLP - Principles in Practice

The purpose of this book is to provide an understanding of NLP for the reader and includes evidence of the tools, techniques and methodology where this is available. The book is designed to be read by a wide range of audiences and it provides a good grounding for individuals who want to underpin their existing knowledge with an evidence base for the approach and to understand how the various components of NLP can be applied across a range of contexts.

The book covers the main tools and techniques of NLP and each chapter is layed out with the overview and rationale for each tool/techniques or philosophy, followed by a literature review which includes references which both support and challenge the model. Any concepts that are directly related to the subject matter are summarised as are the principles of why the particular technique works and how it links back to the overarching theory and principles of NLP. How the technique works is then described followed by the key steps involved in applying the technique. Each section then concludes with a recommended exercise to follow and examples of how the technique can be applied across a number of different contexts.

Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy - A Postmodern Perspective

Written as part of the Routledge - Advancing Theory in Therapy series, Neurolingustic Psychotherapy offers a unique and exciting postmodern perspective on an advancing model of therapy. It places neurolinguistic psychotherapy in context and considers the history of NLP and its relationship to psychotherapy. Presented as an effective model for facilitating neurological change through the therapeutic relationship, the book challenges therapists to incorporate a psychodynamic approach within their work.

In addition, the book also presents:

  • A model of the developing personality and the relationship to attachment theory and emerging theories of neuroscience.
  • A discussion of the linguistic components of NLP and the effectiveness of utilising the language patterns offered by NLP.
  • A challenge to neurolinguistic psychotherapists - asking them to consider the benefits of including relational approaches to therapy above that offered by a programmatic model of change.

Signed copies of Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy - A Postmodern Perspective are available from the office, price £19.99 (No VAT) including Postage & Packing.

At last, a book series that will help make the ideal of effective continuing professional development in the fields of psychotherapy and counselling more of a reality. Without being partisan or requiring an unrealistically high level of existing knowledge, the books offer a unique opportunity for experienced practitioners and advanced students to encounter the cutting edge of theory in their particular theoretical model.

The Role of Brief Therapy in Attachment Disorders.

With contributions and Forward by Betty Alice Erickson

Written as part of the UKCP - Karnac Series, this book provides a comprehensive summary of the range of approaches that exist within the brief therapy world, including Cognative Analytic Therapy, Cognative Behavioural Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, Ericksonian Therapy, Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy, Provocative Therapy, Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy and Self Relations Therapy. Historically, many of the founders of these therapies commenced their psychotherapy careers as psychodynamic or systemic therapists, and switched their allegiance to briefer therapies, viewing these as more respectful and offering greater potential for assisting the client to change through an outcome oriented approach.

Most of these brief therapies operate from a principle of reframing the subjective reality of the client and providing a focus on the future as an effective way of engendering change. The therapies are discussed in the light of emerging theories of neuroscience and direct links are made to attachment disorder and the underpinning theory of object relations. A series of case studies bring these theoretical concepts into life and challenges the notion that attachment disorders can only be addressed through a prolonged psychodynamic relationship with the client. The book considers the potential for neurological repair, growth and ongoing development of the individual through the work of Schore, Gerhardt and Hart amongst others. This opportunity for repair is then linked to the latest theories on attachment disorders, and the role of the therapist in creating the optimum environment for change is considered.

Signed copies of The Role of Brief Therapies in Attachment Disorders are available from the office, price £20.99 (No VAT) including Postage & Packing.

The Role of Brief Therapy in Attachment Disorders is a treasure! It combines the best of a clearly organized and valuable reference book with the air of a highly readable basic book. An examination of various treatment modalities for any disorder is a formidable task. To do this for attachment disorder, which does not have an enormous amount of literature surrounding it, is even more daunting. Lisa Wake takes a logical, step-by-step approach to accomplish this; she is painstaking, covers an enormous amount of material, yet she never bores the reader. Even in the midst of a highly researched chapter, the reader is amazed at how much detailed material is given in interesting and readily comprehensible ways.
